How to Wear a Men's Shawl as a Scarf

A wide rectangular shawl can be worn across the shoulders or folded into a scarf for the neckline. Start with the layer you plan to wear underneath: a shirt needs a different amount of fabric around the collar from a thick knit or closed coat.

1. An open front drape

Lay the shawl around the back of your neck and let the two ends hang down in front. If it feels too wide, fold it lengthwise into broad, loose folds first. Keep the fabric relaxed rather than pressing it into a narrow rope.

Place one end slightly lower if that lets a border show beside your coat opening. Check the outfit with the coat open and closed. The scarf should rest comfortably without pulling the collar upward.

This drape shows narrow stripe bands clearly. Night Harbor offers a dark base and restrained border, while Birch brings a lighter ground beside dark outerwear.

2. A loose loop at the neck

Fold the shawl lengthwise to a comfortable width, then fold it in half across its length. Rest it around your neck and pass the two free ends through the folded loop. Loosen the loop until you can turn your head freely.

A wide shawl can become bulky if too much fabric is gathered under the chin. Broaden the folds or return to an open drape if the loop crowds your neckline. Avoid pulling on the fringe when adjusting the ends.

3. A shoulder throw

Open the shawl across your upper back and bring both ends forward. To change the balance, lift one end over the opposite shoulder. Adjust the overlap so it stays comfortable when you sit or move your arms.

For a patterned piece, turn a decorated border outward before making the throw. An open arrangement gives floral detailing more room than a tight neck loop. Our embroidered shawls show several border placements to compare.

Let unfolded size guide the choice

The same drape will sit differently on shorter and longer shawls. More length leaves more fabric below a loop; greater width adds shoulder coverage or extra folds at the neck. Compare the listing’s unfolded size with a scarf you already wear.

Use the size guide before ordering, then browse striped scarves and shawls for a pattern that works with the layers you own.
